How to Keep Your Body Moving Well as It Gets Colder

October brings cooler mornings, darker evenings and crunchy leaves underfoot. It may also bring something a lot of us are less enthusiastic about: the return of stiff joints, achy muscles and that general feeling of tightening up as the cold sets in.

The good news is that a few simple habits can make a real difference to how your body copes with the change in season.

1. Keep Moving

When it's cold and grey outside, it's tempting to stay indoors and move less. But staying active is one of the best things you can do for your joints and muscles through the colder months. Even a brisk daily walk makes a significant difference to your circulation and overall stiffness levels.

Osteo tip: Warm up properly before exercise in cold weather. Cold muscles are much more prone to injury.

2. Layer Up Sensibly

Keeping your muscles warm genuinely helps, particularly if you already have back, neck or shoulder problems. Dress in layers so you can adapt as the temperature changes throughout the day, and pay particular attention to keeping your lower back and neck warm when you're outside.

3. Watch Out for Wet Leaves and Uneven Ground

Autumn is beautiful but it does come with some hazards underfoot. Wet leaves on pavements and paths can be surprisingly slippery. Wear shoes with good grip and take your time, particularly on steps and slopes.

4. Consider an Autumn MOT

If your body is already starting to feel the effects of the colder weather, now is a great time to book in. Osteopathic treatment can help to release tension, improve mobility and prepare your body for the months ahead.
